Understanding Best-Before Dates

What "best-before" actually means

There's a lot of confusion about food dates. Let's clear it up.

Best-before (BB)

This is a quality date set by the manufacturer. It tells you when the product is at its absolute peak in terms of taste, texture and appearance. It does not mean the food becomes unsafe after that date.

Tinned beans, dry pasta, biscuits, crisps, chocolate, sauces, drinks, tea, coffee, condiments, household products — these are all safe to consume well beyond their best-before date. You might notice tiny differences in flavour or crispness, but nutritionally and safety-wise, they're fine.

The FSAI (Food Safety Authority of Ireland) and most national food agencies confirm this.

Use-by (UB)

This is a safety date and it applies almost exclusively to chilled, perishable items — fresh meat, fish, dairy, prepared foods. After the use-by date, the product may genuinely become unsafe.

We treat use-by stock very carefully. If we sell anything use-by-dated, it'll always have plenty of time left, be shipped quickly, and arrive in proper insulated packaging.

Why this matters

The confusion between best-before and use-by is one of the biggest causes of household food waste in Ireland — an estimated one-third of all food binned at home is still perfectly fine to eat. Knowing the difference saves you money and helps the planet.

What about items past their best-before date?

Sometimes our stock has just gone past its best-before date — usually by a few days to a few weeks. We will sell these items too, but only when:

• The product is sealed and undamaged
• It's been stored correctly throughout
• It looks and presents the same as a fresh batch

Past-BBD stock is flagged clearly on the product page and on the product card — you'll always know exactly what you're buying. Pricing reflects the deeper discount.

Our recommendation: when you receive any past-BBD product, give it a quick check before consuming — confirm the seal is intact, look at the contents, give it a smell. This is sensible practice for any food regardless of date. If anything seems off, don't consume it and contact us at shop@bestb4.ie within 48 hours — we'll refund or replace.

This applies to best-before dates only. We never sell items past a use-by date — use-by is a strict safety deadline that applies to chilled and fresh items.
